How the tip is calculated

The tip is simply the bill multiplied by the tip percentage: a 50 bill at 18% gives a 9 tip and a 59 total. If you split the bill, that total is divided evenly by the number of people. This calculator shows the per-person amount as the headline figure whenever you're splitting, so everyone knows exactly what to put in.

How much should you tip?

In the United States, 15–20% is customary for sit-down restaurant service, with 18% a common default and 20% or more for excellent service. Counter service, coffee and takeaway are lower or optional. Outside the US, tipping norms vary widely — many countries include service in the bill or tip only small amounts — so adjust the slider to match local custom.

Splitting the bill fairly

The quickest way to split is to tip on the full bill and then divide the grand total by the number of diners, which is what this tool does. If people ordered very differently, you may prefer to tip proportionally to each person's share, but an even split is faster and is the norm for casual group meals.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

Etiquette guides generally say tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is perfectly acceptable, though many people simply tip on the final total for convenience. Enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill amount.

What is a good default tip percentage?

For US restaurant service, 18% is a widely used middle-ground: fair for good service and easy to adjust up to 20% or down to 15% depending on your experience.
