Speed, distance and time
These three quantities are linked by one simple relationship: speed = distance ÷ time. Rearranged, distance = speed × time and time = distance ÷ speed. Knowing any two lets you find the third, which is exactly what this calculator does across its three modes.
Watch the units
Speed only makes sense with matching distance and time units. Here distance is in kilometres and time in hours, giving speed in km/h, and the note converts to miles and mph for convenience. If your time is in minutes, divide by 60 first — for example 90 minutes is 1.5 hours.
Everyday uses
Estimate a journey's driving time, check the average speed of a run or ride, or work out how far you'll get in a set time. Because it uses average speed, the result assumes a steady pace; real trips vary with stops and traffic.
Frequently asked questions
How do I enter minutes?
Convert to a fraction of an hour: divide the minutes by 60. So 30 minutes is 0.5 and 45 minutes is 0.75. The time result also shows hours and minutes.
Is this average or instant speed?
Average speed over the whole distance and time. It doesn't capture speeding up and slowing down along the way.
